Description

First meetings and moving a child into your family can be among the most important in helping a child, especially a traumatised one, settle well. Therapeutic Parenting expert Jane Mitchell, knows from personal experience about the pitfalls and gives clear and essential advice in this webinar.

Her words of wisdom centre around understanding what is going through the mind of the child based on their previous experiences - which might have taught them to be very wary indeed of adults. But parents also need to understand their own mindset and how they might need to take a step back and reduce their expectations.

Course Length: 60 minutes.

I enjoyed the course but felt it there were many areas that I didn’t need as my foster child moved in 2 months ago under a slightly different scenario of I was his social worker. That said I will take away some aspects of the webinar such as knowing the child’s history. Even as his social worker I am unaware of the early ACES endured and therefore will chase the children’s social worker to better arm myself with his lived experiences and therefore pre-empting any behaviours that may be linked. There is already certain behaviours such as fidgeting short attention span and some medical issues that could be linked to the traumas he may have faced whilst in utero and others whilst he was a young child.

very helpful as it has made me think more about the young persons perspective on moving to a new home and some of the concerns they may have.
